Meteorologists are scientists who study weather. Teams of them are constantly observing changes in the Earth’s atmosphere to create weather forecasts and predict storms. Experts say that there are about 16 million thunderstorms on Earth every year and at any moment, about 2,000 are happening in different places across the planet. What is a storm? The word storm is used to describe lots of extreme weather conditions. These can include strong winds, heavy rain, hail or snow, and thunder and lightning. The strong winds that often come with storms are caused by cooled air sinking quickly towards the ground. Tropical cyclones are huge systems of fastspinning air, often hundreds of miles wide.
