Many landmarks and historical buildings in Mosul, northern Iraq, are reopening following a major international rebuilding project. Between 2014 and 2017, much of the city was destroyed by war. What happened to Mosul? In 2014, Islamic State (IS), an extremist and violent group based in the Middle East, took control of Mosul. The city, the second-largest in Iraq, was part of a wider area taken over by IS that included parts of Iraq and Syria. While it occupied Mosul, IS destroyed many landmarks, including mosques, churches and shrines, because it considered them to be symbols of idolatry.
