15 February 1903 The first teddy bear goes on sale Almost 120 years ago, Morris Michtom, the owner of a toy shop in New York, US, put a stuffed bear made by his wife, Rose, in the shop window. Rose named it “Teddy’s bear”, after hearing the US president at the time, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, had refused to shoot a bear during a hunting trip. The “Teddy’s bears” became popular and the Michtoms started a company making Teddy’s bears and dolls. It also went on to make the Rubik’s Cube.…
