Queen marks 70 years on the throne

On 6 February, Queen Elizabeth II marked 70 years since her accession to the throne. Accession is when a new king or queen takes the throne upon the death of the previous monarch. Elizabeth became queen on 6 February 1952 when her father, King George VI, died. She was 25 years old. The Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee, which honours 70 years on the throne. From 2 to 5 June, there will be a four-day bank holiday weekend across the UK to celebrate. To mark the event, the Queen held a party at Sandringham House, in Norfolk, England, which is one of her “royal residences” (houses or palaces). Among the guests were Angela Wood.
