NASA hopes to recycle poo
US space agency NASA is looking for ideas on how best to recycle poo – and all sorts of other human waste – in space. It has launched a competition asking the public to send in their best ideas for helping astronauts to live more sustainably. Future missions to Mars are likely to last two to three years, making it difficult to resupply astronauts, so they’ll need to make the most of what they already have. In particular, NASA’s “Waste to Base” challenge is looking for ways to recycle the carbon dioxide gas that astronauts breathe out; the foam materials used to protect items during launch; a variety of other packaging; and human waste, including poo.
