Held this year on 14 February, International Epilepsy Day is a worldwide event to raise awareness about epilepsy. More than half a million people in the UK have the condition, which affects the brain and can cause seizures. A seizure is when the brain has a sudden burst of electrical activity and its messages become mixed up. What is epilepsy? It’s a condition affecting the brain and nervous system. The brain sends and receives chemical and electrical signals around the body but when there’s a sudden increase in signals, a seizure can happen.
