Are urban foxes pests?

Some people say foxes should be treated as pests, like rats.

If you live in a town or city, the chances are you’ve seen a red fox with its bushy red tail and yellow-orange eyes, prowling around the streets and gardens after dark. You may also have heard them turning over dustbins looking for food, or making loud screaming noises as they fight over territory and during mating season in the winter. Foxes are protected by laws that make it illegal to hunt or poison them. However the high number of foxes living in urban areas, combined with their rowdy behaviour, means some people think they should be treated as pests, like rats and mice are.
