During his life, William Shakespeare (1564–1616) wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets (a type of poem). Even though he was alive a long time ago, people still consider his work to be very important. However, his plays can sometimes be difficult to understand because the language of 400 years ago is very different to the way people speak and write today. The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has created a programme called First Encounters, which adapts Shakespeare’s plays so that they’re easier for young people to understand. The next First Encounters play going on tour is The Tempest.
