Wetlands are found all over the world but they need protection.

On 2 February, it is World Wetlands Day, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and our planet. This year’s theme is Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future. What is a wetland? A wetland is an area where the land is covered by water most of the time. This can either be salt water, fresh water or brackish water (a mixture of both). Wetlands can be natural or made by humans. They form when water builds up because it can’t drain away. This water can come from rainfall and estuaries (where a river meets the sea), or from lakes, rivers or the sea when they flood.
