8 December 1965 Race Relations Act comes into force Fifty-nine years ago, the first Race Relations Act came into effect under a Labour government led by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. It was the first set of UK laws to protect people from being treated unfairly on the grounds of “colour, race, or ethnic or national origins” in public places. However, it didn’t protect people from racism in the workplace or while looking for jobs and housing. There were further Race Relations Acts in 1968 and 1976.…
