Norway pauses ocean mining plan

The Norwegian government has been forced to suspend (temporarily stop) a project to allow companies to mine large areas of the sea for precious metals. Areas of the sea bed near Norway are rich in natural materials such as cobalt, copper and lithium. These metals are used in technologies such as electric car batteries, wind turbines, solar panels and environmentally friendly light bulbs. In January this year, Norway became the first country in the world to try a large-scale deep-sea mining project of this kind. However, the plans have been strongly opposed by environmental groups, the fishing industry, scientists and political parties.
