Saving the UK’s cicadas

A British wildlife charity has enlisted the help of a 12-year-old girl living in Slovenia. Kristina Kenda offered to help with a project to bring a species of cicada (a type of insect) back to the UK after experts had difficulties catching the critters. New Forest cicadas, as they are called in the UK, used to be the only cicada species in the country, but they died out in the 1990s. The Species Recovery Trust has launched a project to reintroduce them by collecting the insects from Slovenia. Female cicadas reproduce by laying their eggs in trees. The eggs hatch into young cicadas (nymphs) that fall to the forest floor and burrow underground. The nymphs stay there for six to 10 years, and then come out once they’re adults. Two…
