Australia votes to restrict social media

On 28 November, Australian lawmakers voted to ban social media for children under the age of 16. The new law is expected to come into force in November 2025. The law says that social media companies will have to stop young people under the age of 16 from having an account on their platforms. The companies will need to check the age of people setting up new accounts, and of people who already have accounts. If companies don’t do this, they might have to pay a fine of up to £25 million.
