Rebels capture major city in Syria

A group of rebels have taken control of Aleppo, Syria’s second biggest city. The rebels are armed fighters opposed to the country’s president, Bashar al-Assad. It’s the first time since 2020 that rebels have launched a major attack in the country. What happened? The rebels began their recent attack on 27 November, taking control of a military base and 15 villages. They met very little opposition and by 29 November they had reached the edge of Aleppo. Two days later, they had taken control of the city. The rebels are made up of several different groups but they’re being led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, a group that wants to remove Assad and his government. What’s the background to the attack?
