On the first day of 2024, the US copyright for the versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the 1928 cartoon film Steamboat Willie ran out. Copyright is a legal right that prevents anyone using work, such as a story or artwork, without the creator’s permission. It lasts many years. People can now include this version of Mickey and Minnie in their work without having to ask Disney. Films and a video game starring the cartoon mice were immediately announced. In France, 1 January brought new rules saying people must recycle their organic waste, including left-over food and grass cuttings.
