WOOD WORK About 1,200 oak trees were used to replace the 100-metre wooden roof in Notre-Dame. On 1 December, Norway’s government suspended (temporarily paused) plans to allow companies to dig under large areas of the sea bed to extract precious metals. Environmental groups, scientists and a political party had opposed the plans, saying that deep-sea mining would harm animals and plants. On 3 December, Jasleen Kaur was announced as the winner of the Turner Prize (a famous art award given to a British artist) for her exhibition Alter Altar. The show featured several artworks, including a red car draped in an oversized doily (lacy material used on tables for decoration). Kaur’s exhibition celebrated her Scottish-Sikh heritage.
