On 2 November, Kemi Badenoch was elected as the new leader of the Conservatives, becoming the first black woman to lead a major UK political party. She replaced Rishi Sunak, who had said he would step down after the Conservative Party lost the general election in July. A few days later, Donald Trump was also celebrating election success after winning the race to become US president. His main opponent was the Democratic Party’s Kamala Harris. Trump, who was president between 2017 and 2021, will officially take on the role at a ceremony on 20 January, when he’ll replace current president Joe Biden.
