Nobel Peace Prize awarded

On 10 December, the Nobel Peace Prize 2024 was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo. This is a Japanese organisation that campaigns against the use of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are extremely powerful explosives that can destroy a wide area. The Nobel Peace Prize, which was set up by the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel (1833–1896) honours people who have done outstanding work to create a more peaceful world. In 1945, the US dropped atomic bombs (an early type of nuclear weapon) on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Around 120,000 people died and many thousands more were injured.
