Wildlife in Britain’s rainforests
A list of 11 “weird and wonderful” species living in rainforests around Britain has been unveiled by the Woodland Trust. The charity is working with another group called Plantlife to help look after 27 areas of temperate rainforest. Located in western areas of England, Wales and Scotland – and parts of Northern Ireland – temperate rainforests experience high rainfall and high humidity (meaning there is lots of water in the air) all year round. The list of rainforest species includes the ash-black slug – one of the world’s largest land slugs – and types of lichen (a plantlike organism made of fungi and algae). One looks like a dragon’s skin and another like octopus suckers. Also on the list are blue ground beetles, beavers and white-tailed eagles.…
