Find a festive Norway spruce
The Norway spruce is an evergreen tree (one that doesn’t drop its leaves in autumn) and is found across the UK, although it’s not native. The fast-growing tree was brought here from Scandinavia in the 16th century. The tree’s wood is used to make boxes and paper. People brew beer from its twigs and in the past used its resin (the juice some trees make to protect themselves) to waterproof boats and barrels. Now Norway spruces are popular as Christmas trees. They can reach 40 metres high and live for 1,000 years. The straight trunk grows lots of orange-brown branches covered with small, needle-like leaves. The tree has long, thin red-brown cones that hold its seeds but most of them have fallen off by December.…
