Rescue effort begins after Cyclone Chido
A rescue operation has started after a cyclone hit the French island territory of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean, on 14 December. The tropical storm, called Cyclone Chido, brought huge waves and strong winds of up to 140 miles per hour. The cyclone caused a lot of damage to the island, which is off the coast of East Africa. Chido is the most powerful cyclone to hit the island in more than 90 years. Officials say hundreds of people may have died. Many people on Mayotte live in makeshift homes and shelters, which were destroyed by the storm. They have been left without clean water or electricity.
