Saudi Arabia wins World Cup bid

On 11 December, Saudi Arabia was chosen as the host country for the men’s 2034 World Cup by FIFA, the organisation that governs football around the world. Some countries and human rights groups are unhappy with the decision. Why are people unhappy? Saudi Arabia has an absolute monarchy, which means a king or queen has overall power. Saudi Arabia’s king is Salman bin Abdulaziz. His son Mohammed bin Salman has served as Saudi Arabia’s prime minister since 2022. The government has often been criticised by human rights groups for the way it treats some of its people.
