New treatment for asthma found

Researchers have found a new way to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) attacks. It’s the first time in more than 50 years that a new treatment has been developed. Asthma and COPD are lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. These include coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing. The conditions are caused by damaged or inflamed (swollen) lungs and airways. When the airways get inflamed it causes an asthma attack or a COPD flare-up. Some of these attacks or flare-ups are caused by high levels of a particular type of white blood cell, called eosinophils. White blood cells help the body fight infections, but if there are too many eosinophils they can trigger swelling in the lungs.
