Great silver water beetle

For the first time since 1821, great silver water beetles have been found in Dorset, England. A university student called Wren Franklin was studying animal and plant life in ponds when he came across two. He said, “As soon as I found them, I knew I’d come across something special.” LIFESPAN: Up to three years. HABITAT: Lakes, ponds and ditches in Europe, Asia and North Africa. SIZE: Up to five centimetres long. DIET: Mostly plant material, but the larvae (young) feed on snails. FUN FACT: Great silver water beetles are the heaviest beetle in the UK but they can fly.…
