South Korea’s leader told he must resign

On 11 December, as The Week Junior was going to press, South Korea’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was under pressure to step down after he tried to impose martial law (hand over control of the country and its rules to armed forces for a limited time). Yoon announced martial law on 3 December. He said it was to protect South Korea, particularly from its neighbour, North Korea. However, lots of people in the country say it was an excuse and he did it because he was worried about losing his grip on power. Hundreds of people protested outside parliament, outraged by Yoon’s announcement. South Korea is a democracy, which means people have a say in how their country is run.
