Who is Bashar al-Assad?

Bashar al-Assad became the president of Syria in July 2000. His father, Hafez al-Assad, was president before him and died in June 2000. Hafez al-Assad had been in power since 1971. Throughout his time in power, opponents accused Bashar al-Assad of being a dictator (having complete control of the country). They said he used the military and security services to arrest people without any reason, in order to frighten people and his political opponents. Day-to-day life for many Syrians was terrible under Assad. Today, more than half of Syria’s population do not have a regular supply of affordable, healthy food.…
