Rebels take control of Syria

On 8 December, rebel fighters opposed to Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, took control of the country’s capital city, Damascus. What happened? The rebels launched an attack on government forces on 27 November. The rebels are from different groups but the first attacks were led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The group, whose leader is a man called Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, captured the cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs on their way to Damascus. On 8 December, Assad and his family fled to Russia – which is an ally (friend) of the Assad government. Syria has had a civil war (a war between groups in the same country) since 2011.
