All eyes were on the players at the Euro final, but one person on the pitch had an especially difficult journey to get there – the Ukrainian referee, Kateryna Monzul. She lived in the city of Kharkiv until her country was invaded by Russia in February 2022, when she was forced to hide underground for five days before escaping with her family. Monzul and her family are now living in Italy. On 30 July, Nichelle Nichols died at the age of 89. She was one of the first black women in the US to play a character on TV who had the right to give other people orders. Nichols was in the original Star Trek series, which started in 1966, where she played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, a communications officer on the star ship USS Enterprise. Star Trek challenged stereotypes (too-simple and fixed beliefs about certain types of people) by featuring ethnic-minority actors playing important characters. After her first series, Nichols thought about leaving the role but she was persuaded to stay by Martin Luther King Jr, a famous activist who was campaigning for equality for black people in the US at the time. Treasure found in shipwreck

Treasures from a Spanish sailing ship have been found 350 years after it sank. A team of marine archaeologists (people who study objects from the past found in the sea) have explored the wreck of a ship called the Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas (Our Lady of Wonders). It sank off the coast of the Bahamas, in the Caribbean, with a haul of treasure on board. The Bahamas government gave permission to a team of divers, marine archaeologists and underwater explorers to study the Maravillas shipwreck, and they found all sorts of items on the sea bed. The treasures, dating back to at least the 17th century, included a pendant (a type of necklace) showing the Cross of Santiago. Hosepipe bans have come into force in the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight and Hampshire, England, with Kent and Sussex, also in England, to follow on 12 August. This is because parts of the country face a possible drought (a shortage of water) caused by the recent hot weather and a lack of rainfall. What is a hosepipe ban? This is a rule that says private households have to limit or stop their use of hosepipes. Bans are brought in to save water. 6 August 1926 Gertrude Ederle swims English Channel On 6 August 1926, Gertrude Ederle became the first woman (and sixth person) to swim the English Channel between England and France – a distance of about 21 miles. A 130-year-old railway bridge in Manchester, England, has just opened as the city’s first “urban sky park”. The Castlefield Viaduct includes more than 3,000 plants in its gardens, although one area has been left untouched to show how nature reclaimed the space since the bridge was closed in the 1960s. The park is part of the charity National Trust’s Urban Places Programme, which helps people living in towns and cities get close to nature.…

The world record for the largest disco dance has been broken by people attending Camp Bestival festival in Dorset, England. To raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust charity, 598 people danced next to a giant disco ball as pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor sang We Are Family, a song by Sister Sledge. New art celebrates Hadrian’s Wall

A colourful new art installation has been unveiled to celebrate 1,900 years since the Romans began to build Hadrian’s Wall in what is now the north of England. Building started in AD122 and finished in AD130, and the wall stretched from the east to the west coast of northern Britain. It was built to control people entering the Roman Empire from what is now Scotland, and is named after the Roman emperor at the time. The artwork was requested by English Heritage, a charity that cares for more than 400 historic buildings, monuments and places. The structure stands beside the remains of the wall’s Housesteads Fort, in a spot once occupied by a gatehouse, where soldiers would have stayed. Many cities in the world, from Rio de Janeiro to New Delhi, Kinshasa to London, are full of traffic jams – but it hasn’t always been this way. Before the 1950s, cars were rare in the UK and drivers would always need to keep an eye out for pedestrians (people on foot). Some people have suggested cities should return to this way of living, or go even further and ban cars from cities completely. It would require a big change in the way cities are organised. Roads could be used differently, to free up space for cyclists and pedestrians to move around; for children and young people to play; and for restaurants and cafés to have outdoor seating. That experience taught Fatmata to save, share and be resourceful with food. A sanctuary in Liberia, west Africa, is looking after pangolins, an unusual and endangered species. Liberia has the most forest of any country in west Africa, so it is very biodiverse (a large variety of plants and animal live there). The country is home to a quarter of all mammal species in Africa, including three of the world’s eight species of pangolin. Thanks to their odd appearance, pangolins are sometimes mistaken for reptiles but they are actually the world’s only scaly-skinned mammals. They live in parts of Africa and Asia and are some of the world’s most trafficked (caught and sold illegally) animals. The nettle plant, also known as the stinging nettle, can be seen all year round across the UK and around the world in places with cooler climates. You’re more likely to see it in summer, when it is bursting out of hedgerows onto woodland pathways and into gardens. This also increases the risk of being stung by one. A nettle sting can be a bit painful but it usually fades quickly and is harmless. Nettles have oval, saw-edged leaves, hairy stems and catkin flowers (long clusters). Gulls unfairly blamed for pollution

A campaign to improve water quality at Scottish beaches has been criticised by bird experts for unfairly blaming seagulls. A campaign called “My Beach Your Beach”, which is run by the charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, warned seaside visitors not to feed gulls because their droppings pollute the water. Ornithologists (people who study birds) have accused the campaign of wrongly blaming seagulls, when it’s humans who pollute the sea. Dr Viola Ross-Smith, a gull expert from the British Trust for Ornithology, said gull poo is natural and harmless, compared with plastic or human sewage. “Our seas are full of poos from all kinds of seabirds and fish,” she said. A team of scientists were caught by surprise recently when they spotted an unusual creature near the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and they are now wondering if it was a new species. The scientists were carrying out research on board the E/V Nautilus, a ship used by the Ocean Exploration Trust, which is an organisation that searches for new discoveries in the world’s seas. The team had released a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) named Hercules to explore the sea bed. Equipped with a camera, Hercules can be controlled from the ship and show the team what is happening deep below the surface. Hercules led the scientists to an unusual sight – a mysterious creature that looked like a flower, with a stalk that was two metres long and 40-centimetre…

An ancient predator set in stone

UK scientists recently identified a 560-million-year-old fossil (a trace of an ancient creature left in mud that has turned to stone) as the world’s earliest animal predator. The fossil is probably an early form of cnidaria, a group that includes jellyfish. It was found in Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire, England, and suggests that predators existed 20 million years earlier than experts thought. The creature’s outline was on a slab of siltstone in a quarry (a pit where stone for building is dug up) in 2007, but it took 15 years to work out what it is. It has been named Auroralumina attenboroughii, in honour of Sir David Attenborough, who said he was “truly delighted”.…

Russia has announced that it wants to leave the International Space Station (ISS). The country said it would leave in 2028, when it hopes to have built its own space station. Several countries use the ISS to carry out research in space. The station was first planned in the 1980s, and US and Russia began to build it in 1993. Later, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency joined the project. The station has been in orbit since 1998. It is actually approved to operate until 2024, but the US and Russia had been discussing whether to keep it open until 2030. Featuring the world’s top female cyclists, the Tour de France Femmes returned this July. After eight days of racing on roads around France, the Tour finished on 31 July with Annemiek van Vleuten from the Netherlands being crowned champion. The men’s Tour de France has taken place for more than 100 years, but the women’s Tour isn’t as famous or frequent. In fact, the last race was 33 years ago in 1989. However, the Tour de France Femmes (“femmes” means “women” in French) will now be held every year, just like the men’s race. More than 100 cyclists took part in this year’s Tour. The route changed every day, sometimes going over flat and fast roads and sometimes climbing tough hills and mountains. In total the race covered 639 miles,…

The school of slime New York, in the US, has many attractions: the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building… and a space dedicated to all things slime. At the Sloomoo Institute, visitors can decorate a huge slime wall, jump into a slime lake and explore a glow-in-the-dark slime cave.
