Welcome to the Burryman

On 9 August, in South Queensferry near Edinburgh, a Burryman walked through the streets covered in around 13,000 thistle burrs (the prickly part of the flower). The tradition, which is thought to bring good luck, dates back about 400 years. The Burryman is not allowed to speak for the whole day but during the nine-mile procession, townspeople give him money and whisky, and shout “Hip hip hooray, it’s the Burryman’s Day.” Council worker Andrew Taylor was this year’s Burryman. “I really love the tradition,” he said.…
