NHS launches mental health help

On 27 August, the National Health Service (NHS) announced that it has added mental health support to its 111 service in England. What is the new service? People of any age will be able to contact the service on NHS 111 (see panel) and speak to a mental health professional. The support is available for people struggling with their own mental health or those who are worried about a friend or family member. NHS staff on the 111 calls can organise face-to-face support for patients or guide them to other services that could help. Local health services previously had their own mental health phone lines, which took about 200,000 calls a month.
