So little was once known about dodos that, before scientists proved they actually existed, they were considered mythical creatures. After appearing in Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, they became known as a symbol of extinction. Adult dodos were about one metre tall and weighed as much as 23 kilograms, making the birds quite large (bigger than turkeys). Experts think the dodo would have eaten fruits, nuts and seeds from the forest floor. Some think they also ate crabs and shellfish along the coast. It is thought that dodos swallowed stones to help break up food in their bodies. Many birds that exist today also do this.…
