Paralympic torch travels to France
On 24 August, the Paralympic torch began its journey from England to France for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The torch was first lit in Stoke Mandeville, England, the village where the Paralympics were born in 1948. The flame was lit by British athletes Helene Raynsford, a rower, and Gregor Ewan, a wheelchair curler (curling is a sport that involves sliding stones towards a target on ice). Raynsford, the world’s first Paralympic rowing champion, said that words could not describe “the honour of being chosen” to light the torch. The flame travelled from England to France through the Channel Tunnel, a 31-mile tunnel between the two countries.
