28 August 1994 Shops legally open on Sundays Around 26 years ago, most shops in England and Wales were not allowed to open on a Sunday, because Sunday was considered a day of rest. On 28 August 1994, the Sunday-trading law was relaxed and thousands of shops in England and Wales opened legally for the first time. Small shops were allowed to open all day, but larger shops, such as supermarkets, could only open for a maximum of six hours. A group called Keep Sunday Special opposed the new law, saying that it would lead to an “erosion of family life”.…
