US dazzled by darkness of eclipse

Millions of people across the US marvelled at a spectacular sight on 21 August. Fourteen US states were plunged into darkness as excited stargazers witnessed the first total solar eclipse in more than 38 years. Named the Great American Eclipse 2017, it’s been described as the most observed and photographed eclipse in history. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and blocks the Sun’s rays. This casts a shadow across a specific point on the planet. This year’s total eclipse started in the US state of Oregon, and ended in South Carolina. Temperatures dropped and stars appeared in the middle of the day.
