Skimming to victory

Charlotte Greenway is a rising champ in the ancient sport of stone skimming. It’s difficult to know how long people have entertained themselves in this way, but as one stone-skimming champ says, “There’s something very spiritual about watching a stone skimming across water... It should sink, but it’s saying ‘No, I’m not ready yet.’” There are competitions around the UK, but people headed to Lake Windermere in Cumbria on 20 August for the all-England stone-skimming championships. Greenway, who didn’t manage to beat her personal best of 45 metres and came in second, had some advice for young skimmers. “Just enjoy it,” she said. “Don’t be too scared, and just have fun.”…
