Achoo! Sneezing sea sponges Did you know that sea sponges can sneeze? The creatures will often sneeze when they accidentally suck in sand and other debris (bits of waste) from the ocean. What is even more surprising is that when the sea sponges sneeze, the mucus (snot) they release is eaten by other sea creatures, such as shrimp. Scientists from the University of Amsterdam also discovered that sponge sneezes are incredibly slow, unlike human sneezes. It takes a sea sponge up to 50 minutes to complete a sneeze, so the shrimp have plenty of time to snack.
