Drought hits much of England

Large parts of England are now officially in a “drought”, as low rainfall and hot weather continue to put a strain on water supplies. What is a drought? A drought is a period of time when there is little or no rain, resulting in a lack of water. In the UK, the Government’s Environment Agency decides when an area is in a drought. It makes its decision by assessing things like rainfall, water levels in rivers and reservoirs (lakes that store water) and soil moisture. It also assesses how lack of water affects nature, households, farms and businesses. The drought has been caused by record-breaking weather, including temperatures of over 40C.
