Nature brings boost to farming
The results of a 10-year study have revealed that nature-friendly farming practices can be good for growing crops. The project, run by an organisation called the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, began in 2005 to see how nature-friendly farming methods affected crop yield (the amount of crops produced). The experiment was paid for by the Government and took place on a farm in Hillesden, England. Instead of using all the land for crops, the farm put some aside to create natural habitats for wildlife. The team grew plants that had seeds that birds can eat, along with wildflowers popular with bees and butterflies. There were also areas of thick, long grass left wild for creatures such as birds, insects and small mammals to live. The result was an increased population…
