Piping champions are crowned

The World Pipe Band Championships took place in Glasgow, Scotland on 12 and 13 August, and saw Northern Ireland’s Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band crowned winners for the 13th time. Bagpipe bands from around the world competed in the competition, which took place over two days with over 40,000 people watching. The event included 146 bagpipe bands from 10 nations, including Austria, Canada, the US and Argentina – which competed for the first time. The event has been running since 1948 but this was the first time the championships have run since the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s unclear which country invented bagpipes but they are Scotland’s national instrument and the championships are seen as a celebration of Scottish culture, showcasing Scottish music, food and drink.
