A unique way of making movies
Creating a film using stop-motion animation takes a lot of time and effort. You start by making models of the characters and objects in your imaginary world. Whenever you want them to do anything, you photograph them, move them a tiny bit, then photograph them again – and keep repeating this process. When the photographs are put together (several are needed just for one second of film), they create a moving image. Between now and 1 October, the BFI Southbank, in London, will be celebrating this painstaking process with a free exhibition based on the five films produced by LAIKA, a company that specialises in stop-motion animation, or “handmade animation”.
