The first pyramid to be built in ancient Egypt was the Step Pyramid of Djoser, which is around 4,700 years old. At 61 metres tall, it is made of more than 2.3 million stones weighing around 300 kilograms each. Historians and scientists have often wondered how ancient Egyptians were able to lift such heavy stones up high enough to build the pyramid, but a new study has suggested that they used a water-powered lift to help them. Researchers from the Paleotechnic Institute in France said that a nearby collection of stone walls called Gisr el-Mudir could have been an enclosure designed to hold rainwater.
