Polluters could be punished

Three water companies may face a combined fine (money paid as punishment for breaking rules) of £168 million after an investigation by Ofwat. This is an organisation that makes sure water and sewage companies in England and Wales are doing their jobs properly. The three companies that could face fines are Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water. Ofwat says this is because they haven’t managed their sewer and wastewater systems as well as they should. This led to the companies releasing sewage into rivers and seas, which is harmful to people and the environment. In most of the UK, rainwater and wastewater from people’s toilets and bathrooms flows through the same pipes.
