Study boosts hope for badgers

A new study has suggested that vaccinating badgers could be a good way to get rid of bovine TB (see panel) once and for all. Bovine TB is a disease that can spread to cattle (cows) from badgers and a vaccine is a medicine that trains the body to fight off an infection. Farming rules mean that cattle that have or might have bovine TB must be killed for human safety. For many years, badgers have been culled (when animals are killed to bring down the population) in England to help fight the spread of the disease.
