Why is there a war?

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea (a region of Ukraine) and claimed it as its own. This is because Russian president Vladimir Putin sees Ukraine as part of Russia. Later that year, Russia also seized territory in Donbas, Ukraine. The conflict got worse in February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Leaders of countries around the world criticised Putin for his actions, and many of them sent military aid to Ukraine to help the country defend itself. Since the invasion in 2022, more than 6.5 million Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes because of the fighting.…
