Ukraine’s forces enter Russia

Tens of thousands of Russians have been moved to safety from the Kursk region in Russia after Ukrainian forces launched an attack across the border between the two countries. This is the first time Russia has been invaded since 1941. What happened? On 6 August, Ukrainian troops entered the Kursk region, taking Russian forces by surprise. After nearly a week of fighting there, Ukraine’s top military commander said on 12 August that they were in control of 1,000 square kilometres of Russian territory. The governor of Kursk said that at least 12 civilians (people not in the armed services) had been killed and 121 more were injured.
