China’s military held large-scale exercises (practices) close to Taiwan, an island in east Asia, after an important US politician called Nancy Pelosi paid an official visit to the island on 2 August. Workers strike over Komodo ticket prices

Indonesian tourism workers have gone on strike (refuse to work as a protest) over a large increase in the prices visitors must pay to see Komodo dragons in the Komodo National Park. People will now have to pay 3.8 million rupiah (£206). The previous price was 200,000 rupiah (£11). The government put the price up to protect Indonesia’s 3,300 Komodo dragons – which are endangered – from too much human contact. Komodo dragons are large lizards that grow up to three metres long. The islands where the dragons live attracted more than 200,000 visitors in 2019, but the government fears that these large numbers put the creatures in danger. The government hopes that the new price will reduce visitor numbers. However, local workers fear that the expected fall in tourist…

Reef shows signs of recovery

A report released in early August by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) has revealed that two thirds of the Great Barrier Reef is showing the largest amount of coral cover in 36 years. This has led experts to believe that coral reefs can recover from damage. However, parts of the reef are struggling because of a species called the crown-of-thorns starfish, which eats coral. Mike Emslie from AIMS told Reuters that the improvement of the northern and central parts of the reef shows how resilient the coral is, because it has been able to “recover from disturbances”. He added, “The worrying thing is, these disturbance events are increasing, particularly mass bleaching.” Coral bleaching is when the sea water is too warm and coral has to expel the algae…

The end of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, was celebrated with a closing ceremony on 9 August. What did the ceremony involve? A crowd of 30,000 at the Alexander Stadium watched a spectacular show, which featured lots of famous musicians from Birmingham and the surrounding area. The acts included UB40, Jorja Smith, Panjabi MC, Beverley Knight and Ozzy Osbourne. A huge chimney rose up from the centre of the stage as a reminder of Birmingham’s industrial past. Also appearing on stage were some of the area’s talented young people, who highlighted the city’s future. 18 August 1964 South Africa banned from Olympics On 18 August 1964, South Africa was told it could not take part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned the country because of its policy of apartheid, which treated people of colour very unfairly. The IOC said it would only let South Africa take part in the Olympics if it allowed people of colour and white people to compete together in sport. A 12-year-old girl from Prestatyn, Wales, has made more than 200 survival blankets (light, metal-coated sheets designed to keep in heat) for homeless people, using nearly 10,000 crisp packets. Alyssa says she opens out and washes the packets before she makes the blanket, and the silver inside the crisp packets reflects heat to keep people warm. She told the BBC, “Crisp packets are really hard to recycle, so this is a new way to stop them going in the bin.”…

Tributes have been paid to Roy Hackett who died on 3 August at the age of 93. Hackett was one of the leading organisers of the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, and he is well known for his work to improve the rights of black and Asian people in the UK. Asher Craig, deputy mayor of Bristol, said Hackett was a “humble, principled, freedom fighter” and “his legacy will live on.” A boycott is when people stop using a service in protest over something it has done. The Bristol Bus Boycott was organised by Hackett along with Owen Henry, Audley Evans, Prince Brown and Paul Stephenson. France Rescuers try to help stranded whale A beluga whale that became stranded after it swam into the River Seine has died. Rescuers had been trying to save the four metre-long whale and help it get back to the sea. Beluga whales usually live in the cold waters of the Arctic, and it is thought the whale had swum into the river because it was ill and got confused. California, US Giant trees survive wildfire Giant sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park, California, have not been damaged by a wildfire in late July. When Rico had to write a story for homework club at Manchester City Academy, he found that he kept coming back to one phrase: “strong and tough”. Now, aged 11, football-mad Rico Hinson-King talks to The Week Junior ahead of the publication of his first book – Strong and Tough. Ninety-eight-year-old Giuseppe Paternò has become the oldest person to graduate (finish) university – and he passed with top marks. Paternò wrote all of his essays and assignments using a typewriter instead of a computer. This summer, he was finally awarded a Master’s degree in history and philosophy. Most people think rainforests only exist in hot, tropical areas such as South America or Africa. However, there is also a type of rainforest in the west of Scotland. It’s not tropical; it is “temperate” rainforest, which is very rare. There are temperate rainforests in North America too – they grow in places where the weather is cooler than tropical regions and it rains all year round. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), a charity, has recently bought a Highland nature reserve, intending to protect the area and bring back the rainforests of Scotland. Grass snakes are the largest snakes in the UK, but they’re nothing to worry about. They don’t attack people. In fact, the grass snake has many predators, including badgers, birds, cats, foxes and even hedgehogs. They often play dead rather than fight back, but if you pick them up and they feel threatened, they can give off a horrible smell from their rear end. Grass snakes love wetlands and ponds, where they will often have a swim, and in the summer they like to sunbathe. They visit gardens on the lookout for compost heaps, where they lay eggs that hatch in early autumn. On 15 August 1947, India became an independent, democratic country of 340 million people after Britain had ruled India directly for nearly 90 years. The date also marks when Britain split India into two countries – India and Pakistan – in a process called Partition. Tonga’s record eruption

When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on 15 January 2021, it blasted record-breaking amounts of water into the air, scientists say. The undersea eruption happened in the Pacific Ocean, near the island nation of Tonga, and scientists don’t yet know for sure how it will affect the planet. The eruption put 146 million tonnes of water into the atmosphere – that’s enough to fill 58,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This happened when the volcano’s hot, molten rock suddenly came into contact with sea water. The water was instantly heated into steam and shot up as high as 33 miles into the air. The water was detected by NASA’s Aura satellite, which measures the levels of different gases, including water vapour, in the Earth’s atmosphere. The satellite had measured other volcanic…

The Aura satellite was launched in 2004. Before the Tonga eruption, it studied two other blasts that threw lots of water into Earth’s atmosphere – the Kasatochi eruption in Alaska, US, in 2008, and the 2015 Calbuco eruption in Chile. After those eruptions, the water vapour didn’t stay in the atmosphere for long. The satellite also showed that the Calbuco eruption cooled the Earth, because a chemical called sulfur dioxide, from the volcano, reacted with water vapour high in the atmosphere. This created tiny particles that reflected sunlight away from the Earth.…

On 5 August, the Premier League kicked off in England. The 2022-23 season started with a London derby (game between teams that are based near each other). Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 2-0. City’s exciting new striker, Erling Haaland, is likely to be one of the star players this season. Balloon festival lifts off

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta will bring the skies above the English city alive with colour from 11 to 14 August. It is Europe’s largest annual hot-air balloon event and it attracts more than 100 hot-air balloons and ballooning teams from all over the world. Around 500,000 visitors usually come to watch the show. The first fiesta was held in 1979, when just 27 balloons took part. Today, huge numbers of balloons in all shapes, sizes and designs lift off during “mass ascents”, at 6am and 6pm each day. Over the years, the festival has featured balloons modelled on Darth Vader from Star Wars, Rupert Bear and Thomas the Tank Engine. The skies also fill with smaller “model” balloons. Fans of DC Comics had been looking forward to a new film, Batgirl, due in cinemas and HBO Max later this year, but now Warner Bros Discovery, the studio behind the film, has announced that it will not be released at all. Filmed entirely in Glasgow, Scotland, Batgirl reportedly cost up to £75 million to create, which would make it one of the most expensive films ever cancelled. Inside an “amazement park” The world’s first “amazement park” has opened in Bristol, England. The park, called Wake the Tiger, uses lights, sound and costumes to transport visitors into a fabulous world. Just as I was writing this, we heard that the beluga whale that swam into the River Seine in France had died (p6). Rescuers tried their best but the whale was just too weak to recover. In happier news, we were very excited to hear about the Great Barrier Reef’s recovery in Australia (p3). Of course, the reef is still at risk from warmer sea temperatures and crown-of-thorns starfish, but scientists are delighted to see that coral is more resilient than they had realised. It’s one of my favourite themes, that nature can recover but humans must support it and give it a chance. Name: Amna “My name is Amna and I am writing in response to the Wellbeing section on change, which was in a recent issue of The Week Junior, just to say that change never gets easier. I have moved schools NINE TIMES including in September 2021, when I moved to St Paul’s Girls, London. Moving schools is hard enough but I had to move between countries, England and Pakistan. This is not the first time I have moved countries though, so I was as ready as I would ever be.
