Bangladesh’s prime minister steps down

On 5 August, Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down from her role and left the country, following protests that started in June. Hasina has served as prime minister since 2009 and was elected for a fifth term in January. The protests, led by students, began because people were unhappy with a rule that reserved 30% of jobs in the government. These reserved jobs were for relatives of members of the military who fought in the war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. There were further protests in the capital, Dhaka, on 3 and 4 August, and clashes with police led to violence, during which at least 90 people were killed.
