Looking a bit like a white buttercup, this plant is found across the UK in hedgerows, meadows and areas of old woodland. Wood anemones are one of the first plants to flower in spring, taking advantage of the still-bare trees, which allow light to reach the woodland floor. In fact, if you find this plant in a strange location, it’s often a clue that old woodland was once there. As a result, these are sometimes called “woodland ghosts”. Wood anemones spread slowly along underground stems called rhizomes. They often look like a carpet of tiny white stars, and the flowers are loved by hoverflies. The name anemone comes from the Greek god Anemos, who is said to have sent the flowers ahead of him in spring.…
