King Tut turns tour guide in Cairo

Imagine exploring some of the artefacts of ancient Egypt with a tour guide who was one of its most famous rulers. That’s what visitors to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo are enjoying, thanks to clever use of augmented-reality technology. The guide is King Tutankhamun, who has been recreated as a virtual character in an app called MuseumEye, which visitors can use while wearing a special headset in the museum’s famous Tutankhamun exhibit. “Wearing the headset transforms the room into the Pharaoh’s temple, where he introduces himself and demonstrates his power and riches,” says Ramy Hammady, who developed the app as part of his work at the University of Huddersfield here in the UK.
