Robot surgeons are a cut above the rest

Robots seem to be everywhere. We’ve had robot dogs, robot bees and even robot burger-flippers. And now we’ve got robot surgeons. Meet da Vinci Xi, a £1.5 million “robotic” surgeon that operates on people using very small, precise instruments attached to its four arms. During the operation, a human surgeon (who needn’t be in the same country as the patient) sits at a computer console. Using hand and foot controls, the surgeon moves the robot’s arms and conducts the operation. A second surgeon stands near the patient to make sure the robot is correctly positioned. Da Vinci Xi was recently used at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, to perform delicate surgery on a patient’s stomach.
